Abstract

The Kanyin Hydropower Project is located on the Kanyin River,a tributary of the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar.It is a small-to-medium-scale hydroelectric facility designed primarily for power generation,as well as irrigation and flood control.Utilizing the head difference between the upstream and downstream sections of the existing Kanyin Reservoir,a new auxiliary dam,intake structure,and penstock were constructed to achieve an installed capacity of 10.5 MW.Due to special geological conditions at the dam site,characterized by alternating layers of Neogene sandstone and shale prone to softening upon contact with water,the diversion system adopted a scheme combining an embedded pipe under the dam with a backfill pipe,totaling approximately 410 meters in length.Hydraulic analysis indicated a total head loss of 1.52 m for the diversion system and a water inertia time constant(Tw)of 2.72 s,eliminating the need for a surge chamber.This design satisfied hydraulic efficiency requirements while ensuring constructability and cost-effectiveness,offering a valuable reference for the design of diversion systems under similar geological conditions.
