Abstract

This study focuses on a 100-meter-high asphalt concrete core sand-gravel dam located in a high seismic intensity zone in western China.By employing a three-dimensional nonlinear finite element method,the static and dynamic characteristics of the dam were analyzed.The computational results indicate that the absolute values of the dam's acceleration response under dynamic conditions without reinforcement are notably large,and the upstream dam slope faces instability risks under the checking seismic condition(645 gal).Based on these findings,geogrid reinforcement measures are proposed for the dam crest area.The effectiveness of these engineering measures and the ultimate seismic capacity of the reinforced dam are evaluated from perspectives including slope stability,seis-mic permanent deformation,and safety of the asphalt core.The results demonstrate that the geogrid reinforcement enhances the dam's seismic safety,with the ultimate seismic capacity reaching 0.70-0.75 g,showing a safety margin compared to the checking seismic intensity of 645 gal.
