New urbanization and income:A perspective of inclusive growth

Abstract
How to balance efficiency and equity in urbanization in order to achieve inclusive growth is a critical challenge,and new urbanization represents a major policy innovation in China's urbanization process.Utilizing data from the China Family Panel Studies(CFPS)from 2012 to 2020,and treating the new urbanization pilot program as a quasi-natural experiment,this study applies standard difference-in-differences(DID)and synthetic difference-in-differences(SDID)estimation methods to systematically evaluate the impact of the policy on residents'income from the perspectives of growth and inclusiveness.The findings reveal the follows:Firstly,the new urbanization policy significantly increase the residents'income in pilot areas,with income growth effect mainly operating through non-agricultural employment and household entrepreneurship.Furthermore,the income-enhancing effect is more pronounced for households with a higher share of working-age members,higher human capital,and greater physical capital.Secondly,the growth of income brought by the new urbanization policy benefits the majority of residents in pilot areas.Among them,upper-middle-income groups experienced the largest gains,while the low-income groups lagged behind in terms of income growth.关键词
