Abstract

To address the challenge that certain critical welded structures in nuclear power plant construction cannot be in-spected by conventional radiographic testing(RT),this study proposes the use of Alternating Current Field Measurement(ACFM)technology for inter-layer online inspection of stainless steel welds.An ACFM system and process were developed,including inspection equipment and probes.Simulation of layered weld defects was carried out,and a high-sensitivity narrow-base probe was designed to meet the requirements of inter-layer inspection of stainless steel welds.By designing simulated test blocks containing defects of various types,sizes,and locations,ACFM inspection tests were conducted.The test results show that the ACFM technology achieved a 100%detection rate for the 81 preset unacceptable defects(e.g.,cir-cular defects with diameters≥1.2 mm)in the test blocks,with no missed detections.The 24 non-relevant indications(false calls)that occurred during the tests were confirmed to be caused by weld-surface undulations or excessive roughness,and could be eliminated by examining the surface condition.The research on inter-layer ACFM inspection of stainless steel welds provides a new method and innovative approach for detecting internal weld defects.
