Abstract

A biofilter(BF)was employed to treat toluene,and its treatment efficiency was investigated.The washing effects of NaOH solution and Tween-20 solution on the packed bed after BF clogging were compared,and the washing protocol for the packed bed was optimized.The experimental results show that when the BF is initiated under a toluene mass concentration of 1 000 mg/m3,the maximum toluene removal rate reaches 99%,with an average removal rate exceeding 90%.When the toluene mass concentration is increased to 3 000-4 000 mg/m3,prolonged operation leads to clogging of the BF,with the toluene removal rate stabilizing at around 50%.After washing with NaOH solution(0.4%,w),the microbial community structure remains largely unchanged.In contrast,washing with Tween-20 solution(10.0%,w)results in a simplified microbial community structure.After two rounds of NaOH solution washing combined with mechanical stirring,the biomass in the BF decreases to 150 kg/m3,and the porosity of the packed bed increases to approximately 35%,alleviating clogging and facilitating long-term stable operation of the system.
