Effects of biochar addition on shoot emergence and new bamboo growth in moso bamboo(Phyllostachys edulis)forests

Abstract
[Objective]Moso bamboo(Phyllostachys edulis)is an important forest resource in China and is widely distributed in southern China.Investigating the effects of biochar with different particle sizes and different application rates on the growth of bamboo shoots and new bamboo culms in Phyllostachys edulis forests can provide a theoretical basis for soil improvement and scientific management of Phyllostachys edulis forests.[Method]Pure Phyllostachys edulis stands with similar site conditions and stand conditions were selected in Miaoshanwu Forest Area of Qianjiangyuan Forest Ecosystem Research Station,National Forestry and Grassland Administration,Fuyang District,Hangzhou City,Zhejiang Province.One control group(CK)and six treatment groups were established,namely:biochar with coarse particle size(5 mm)at a low application rate(CB1,5 t/hm2);biochar with coarse particle size(5 mm)at a medium application rate(CB2,10 t/hm2);biochar with coarse particle size(5 mm)at a high application rate(CB3,15 t/hm2);biochar with fine particle size(2 mm)at a low application rate(XB1,5 t/hm2);biochar with fine particle size(2 mm)at a medium application rate(XB2,10 t/hm2);and biochar with fine particle size(2 mm)at a high application rate(XB3,15 t/hm2).[Result]The results showed that:compared with the control group(CK),all six treatments increased the number of bamboo shoots germinated.Among them,the number of bamboo shoots in the CB2 and XB2 treatments was significantly higher than that in other treatments,increasing by 91.30%and 108.70%,respectively.The average diameter at breast height(DBH)of new bamboo culms in all six treatments was higher than that in CK,and the average DBH in the CB2 and XB2 treatments was significantly larger than that in CK,reaching 10.20 cm and 10.35 cm,respectively,indicating that the CB2 and XB2 treatments exhibited the most pronounced promoting effect on the average DBH.In addition,the proportions of medium-diameter timber and large-diameter timber increased under the CB1,CB2,CB3,XB1,XB2,and XB3 treatments.Notably,the CB3 treatment significantly increased the proportion of large-diameter timber by 27%,suggesting that it had the best effect on improving the quantity of large-diameter timber in Phyllostachys edulis stands.The growth dynamics of new bamboo culms revealed that the ground diameter and height growth of bamboo shoots showed distinct phasic patterns during the study period:in the early stage,growth was dominated by ground diameter increment,while height growth was relatively slow;in the late stage,height growth accelerated rapidly,whereas ground diameter growth slowed down.Within a certain time frame,the promoting effect of biochar with fine particle size on the ground diameter and height growth of bamboo shoots was superior to that of biochar with coarse particle size.[Conclusion]Among the six treatments,the application of biochar with fine particle size at a medium rate(XB2)significantly increased the bamboo shoot germination quantity,average diameter at breast height(DBH),and the quantity of medium and large-diameter timber in Phyllostachys edulis stands.In contrast,the application of biochar with coarse particle size at a high rate(CB3)exhibited a significant promoting effect on the increase in the quantity of large-diameter timber.Therefore,in practical Phyllostachys edulis management,applying biochar with fine particle size at a medium rate(XB2)yields good results when the cultivation goal is to improve bamboo shoot germination quantity,average DBH,and the quantity of medium and large-diameter timber.When the primary goal is to cultivate large-diameter timber,the application of biochar with coarse particle size at a high rate(CB3)is more effective.关键词
