Ultimate responses and bearing failure modes of high-rise buildings isolated by anti-tension lead-plug laminated rubber bearings

Abstract

Severe earthquakes may lead to the tensile fracture of bearings in high-rise buildings. Therefore,structural stability would not be guaranteed. In this study,shaking table tests were performed on six base-isolated high-rise building models to investigate their ultimate responses and bearing failure modes. These models have aspect ratios of 3,5,or 7. The isolation layers of these test models were lead core rubber bearing (LRB) or anti-tension lead-plug laminated rubber bearing (TLRB). Results of tests indicate that when the peak ground accelerations reach 0. 95g,0. 80g,and 0. 70g,the ultimate motion types for these test models with aspect ratios of 3,5,and 7 are sinking type,rotating,and uplift-rotating around one side of the isolation layer. The corresponding failure modes of bearings are compressive-shear buckling,compressive-shear buckling,and tensile failure in order.On the other hand,the excessive displacements of test models are restrained by TLRB. Thus,TLRBs can prevent compressive-shear buckling and tensile failure. Meanwhile,the test model remained stable even when the overturning moment was far greater than the anti-overturning moment. A simplified numerical analysis model was established to investigate the ultimate behaviors of a base-isolated building. The accuracy of this numerical model was verified by test results. Parameter analysis indicates that a vertical earthquake may cause tensile fracture of the bearing. This situation can be prevented by increasing the building' s self-weight,but this will increase the likelihood of compressive-shear buckling of the bearings.
