A randomized controlled trial of effects of retrieval-extinction on fear episodic associative memory in college students

Abstract
Objective:To explore the extinction effect of retrieval-extinction on fear and its impact on the fear episodic association memory for conditioned-unconditioned stimulus parings.Methods:A total of 67 college students were randomly assigned to either a retrieval extinction group(n=34)or a traditional extinction group(n=33).The experimental procedures were programmed using E-prime 2.0 software.Skin conductance response(SCR)values served as physiological indicators of fear,while spontaneous recovery tests were used to evaluate the extinc-tion effect.Memory recognition task were employed to assess the fearepisodic associative memory.SCR data were processed offline using Bionpac Student Lab 4.1.Results:The SCR value for fear spontaneous recovery in the re-trieval-extinction group was significantly lower than that in the traditional extinction group[(0.42±0.59)vs.(0.79±0.73),P＜0.05].However,there was no statistically difference in the recognition accuracy of fear episodic associative memory between the two groups(P＞0.05).Conclusion:The retrieval-extinction couldeffectively in-hibit the spontaneous recovery of fear,demonstrating better extinction effects,but has no significant impact on the fear episodic association memory.关键词
