Joint developmental trajectories of depression and suicidality in Chinese college students and their relationship with adverse childhood experiences

Abstract
Objective:To identify joint developmental trajectories of depression and suicidality among college students and examine the role of adverse childhood experiences(ACEs).Methods:Using a longitudinal design,3 797 college students were followed up for 4 years.The Beck Depression Inventory-Ⅱ-Chinese(BDI-Ⅱ-C),Ado-lescent Suicide Tendency Scale(ASTS),Adverse Childhood Experience questionnaire(ACEs)and Symptom Checklist 90(SCL-90)were used to assess the depression,suicidality,adverse childhood experiences and mental health symptoms of college students.Latent class growth modeling(LCGM)was used to identify the joint develop-mental trajectories of depression and suicidality.Variance analysis was used to test the differences in mental health among different subgroups.Multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to test the predictive effect of ACEs.Results:Four distinct trajectories were identified,namely low depression-low suicidality-increasing group(C1,26.3％),moderate depression-high suicidality-increasing group(C2,11.6％),high depression-high suicidali-ty-rapidly decreasing group(C3,10.0％)and low depression-low suicide-slow decreasing group(C4,52.1％).Individuals with high abuse and high neglect in ACEs were more likely to be in the group C1 and C2,and males were more likely to be in group C2(OR=0.64).The severity of 10 factors of mental health symptoms followed gradient C3=C2>C1>C4.Conclusion:This study identifies four joint trajectories of depression and suicidality in college students,highlights the heightened psychological risks in certain subgroups,and confirms abuse and neglect in childhood as key risk factors.关键词
