Abstract

The fundamental task of education is to foster virtue and cultivate talents.In the rapidly changing modern society,the connotation and implementation pathways of fostering character and civic virtue also continuously evolve with the times.Vocational education occupies half of the entire education system in China.The professional technical skills of vocational education students have long been regarded as one of the most critical factors supporting the rapid development of Chinese industry.Against the backdrop of rapid iteration in production technology,students'transferable skills and adaptability to change are becoming increasingly vital.Core competencies such as problem-solving,interpersonal skills,emotional management,self-awareness,digital skills,green skills,innovation,and critical thinking play a crucial supporting role in enabling vocational education students to adapt to future changes,achieve career growth,and ensure sustainable development.These competencies are also highly significant for the digital and green transformation of the economy and society.Based on 14 976 student questionnaires and 1 269 teacher questionnaires,this study employs quantitative analysis to examine the current status of vocational students'core competencies,the effectiveness of competency enhancement activities,and preferences and suggestions regarding relevant pathway choices.The research data indicate:both students and teachers in the vocational education field consider core competencies very important;the current level of core competencies among vocational students is moderately above average,and teaching activities aimed at enhancing these competencies show some effectiveness,but there remains significant room for improvement;extracurricular practical activities and specialized competency enhancement programs are regarded by both students and teachers as the most effective methods for improving core competencies;most students currently lack sufficient guidance and support to translate awareness of competency enhancement into concrete self-improvement actions.
