The Pathway Mechanisms of Different Types of Childhood Trauma on Depression:The Mediating Effect of Maladaptive Emotion Regulation and Overgeneral Autobiographical Memory

Abstract
Objective:To explore the effect of maladaptive emotion regulation and overgeneral autobiographical memory(OGM)in the relationship between different types of childhood trauma(childhood abuse and childhood neglect)and depres-sion.Methods:A total of 203 patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder(MDD)and 213 demographically matched healthy controls(HC)were recruited to complete the center for epidemiological studies-depression scale(CES-D),child-hood trauma questionnaire(CTQ),cognitive emotion regulation questionnaire(CERQ)and autobiographic memory test(AMT).Structural equation modeling(SEM)was conducted to examine pathway relationships among these variables in the MDD group.Results:(1)Compared with HC group,the MDD group had significantly higher scores on all psychological measures(all P＜0.001,|Cohen's d|=1.13～3.44)and recalled fewer specific autobiographical memories in the AMT(P＜0.001,|Cohen's d|=0.64);(2)Childhood abuse exerted a positive indirect effect on depression both through maladaptive emo-tion regulation alone and via a sequential pathway involving maladaptive emotion regulation and OGM,whereas childhood neglect influenced depression solely through OGM.Conclusion:Childhood trauma may exacerbate depressive symptoms through a sequential mediation involving maladaptive emotion regulation and OGM,with distinctive pathways identified for abuse and neglect.关键词
