Parental Harsh Discipline and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury among Adolescents:The Chain Mediating Effect of Shame and Fear of Self-Compassion and Its Gender Difference

Abstract
Objective:To explore the effect of parental harsh discipline on adolescent non-suicidal self-injury(NSSI),as well as the chain mediating effect of shame and fear of self-compassion,and its gender difference.Methods:A total of 1267 adolescents participated in this investigation.After providing informed consent,they completed a series of self-report surveys including Parent-Child Conflict Tactics Scale,Middle School Students' Shame Scale,Fears of Compassion Scales and Adolescents Self-Harm Scale.Results:Shame played an independent mediating role in the relationship between the two forms of parental harsh discipline(psychological aggression/corporal punishment)and adolescent NSSI.Fear of self-compassion only played an independent mediating role in the relationship between maternal psychological aggression and adolescent NSSI.Shame and fear of self-compassion played a chain mediating role between the two forms of parental harsh discipline and adolescent NSSI.The chain mediation models of the two forms of parental harsh discipline affecting adolescent NSSI showed gender differences among adolescents.Specifically,both paternal and maternal psychological ag-gression had stronger negative effects on same-gender offspring's NSSI(i.e.,fathers on sons,mothers on daughters).Addi-tionally,the negative effects of both paternal and maternal corporal punishment on NSSI were more pronounced in girls com-pared to boys.Conclusion:These findings emphasize the importance of addressing adolescent NSSI by reducing parental harsh discipline and adolescents'experiences of shame and fear of self-compassion,while tailoring interventions to adoles-cent gender-specific pathways.关键词
