Abstract

To investigate the fugitive emission behavior and health risks of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFAS)mediated by fine particulate matter(PM2.5)during wastewater treatment,this study employed liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry to analyze typical PFAS in PM2.5 samples from a wastewater treatment plant(WWTP)and surrounding areas in Qingdao during winter,along with corresponding wastewater/sludge samples from treatment units.Results revealed that 10 out of 15 target PFAS were detected in PM2.5 with total concentrations ranging from 110.00 to 336.78 pg·m−3.The fine screen unit exhibited the highest PFAS diversity(10 species),while the sludge dewatering room showed the peak concentration(336.78 pg·m−3).Along the upwind-downwind-WWTP gradient,both PFAS variety and concentration in PM2.5 displayed increasing trends.Wastewater was identified as the dominant source(>44.73%contribution)of airborne PFAS across all units.Long-chain PFAS demonstrated higher aerosolization priority than short-chain analogs,exhibiting greater fugitive potential from liquid phase.The total diffusive flux of WWTP-originated PFAS in PM2.5 reached 7.12 mg·d−1 with transport distances of 10~40 km.Children in downwind areas showed 3-fold higher exposure doses to PM2.5-bound PFAS compared to adults.These findings provide theoretical support for controlling airborne PFAS pollution and safeguarding public health near WWTPs.
