The mediating role of benefit finding in relationship between self-perceived aging and advance care planning readiness among elderly patients with chronic diseases

Abstract
Objective To investigate the current status of Advance Care Planning(ACP)readiness among elderly patients with chronic diseases and to examine the mediating role of benefit finding in the relationship between self-perceived aging and ACP readi-ness.Methods A convenience sampling method was used to recruit 160 elderly patients with chronic diseases from seven communi-ties in Shanxi Province.The ACP Readiness Scale,the Brief Self-Perceived Aging Questionnaire,and the Benefit Finding Question-naire were employed to assess ACP readiness,self-perceived aging,and benefit finding,respectively.Spearman's correlation analysis was performed to examine the bivariate relationships among ACP readiness,self-perceived aging,and benefit finding.The mediating role of benefit finding was tested using the nonparametric Bootstrap method.Results The total score of ACP readiness among elderly patients with chronic diseases was 78.44±13.35.Self-perceived aging showed a negative correlation with benefit finding(r=-0.519,P<0.01),while benefit finding was positively correlated with ACP readiness(r=0.582,P<0.01).Benefit finding significantly mediated the relationship between self-perceived aging and ACP readiness,accounting for 48.21%of the total effect.Conclusion The ACP readi-ness among elderly patients with chronic diseases is at a moderately high level.The ACP readiness can be further enhanced by foster-ing benefit finding and addressing negative self-perceived aging.关键词
