Standardized Expressions for the Statement that"a Certain Disease in Western Medicine Falls Within the Category of a Certain Disease or Syndrome in Traditional Chinese Medicine"

Abstract
In contemporary research and education on the integration of western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),the expression that"a certain disease in western medicine falls within the category of a certain disease or syndrome in TCM"is widely used.By examining the meanings of the two core terms"falls within"and"category"in this commonly used formulation,this paper argues that such wording attempts to establish an absolute and rigid subordinative relationship.From the perspectives of logic and clinical practice,and based on arguments including the facts that a single western medical disease may correspond to multiple TCM diseases or syndromes,a single TCM disease or syndrome may correspond to multiple western medical diseases,and that the paradigms of western medicine and TCM are incommensurable,this paper contends that the prevailing expression lacks semantic preci-sion and logical comprehensiveness,and may lead to cognitive bias and clinical misjudgment when applied in prac-tice.To address these issues,it is proposed that,on the basis of deconstructing the existing formulation,static and rigid"belonging"relationships should be replaced with dynamic relationships such as"related to","manifesting as","similar to",or"analogous to".It is further emphasized that such"similarity"or"analogy"must be clearly speci-fied in terms of the particular pathological stage,pathological mechanisms,and clinical manifestations involved.This reconstruction of expression is of significant importance for the modern development of TCM and for the deep integra-tion of Chinese and western medicine.关键词
