The Influence of Language Ability on Employment Quality:Based on the Analysis of Domestic Service Industry

Abstract
The development of the domestic service industry is an important measure for China to deal with the problem of"the elderly and child care".Whether migrant workers can find high quality jobs in this sector not only relates to their own survival and development,but also bears significant implications for people's livelihood security and the well-being of all families.International research on immigrant language ability and success in the labor market provides new perspectives on this topic.In order to explore the impact of migrant domestic workers'language skills on employment quality,this paper used instrumental variable method(CMP)to analyze whether language ability can help domestic workers get high quality jobs based on the 2019 China Special Survey on Domestic Workers.The results showed that Mandarin proficiency significantly enhanced the possibility of domestic workers obtaining maternal and child care positions,and proficiency in the local dialect of the destination area was helpful for them to obtain elderly care roles.Additionally,Mandarin proficiency can significantly improve the employment quality of migrant domestic workers.Based on these findings,the study discussed the underlying causes and the social stratification within the domestic service industry.It further proposed suggestions such as strengthening language training for domestic workers and improving their communication skills to enhance human capital,foster social recognition,and elevate employment quality.关键词
