The Evolution and Heterogeneity of Rural Brothers and Sisters'Educational Inequality:Analysis Based on CHARLS 2018 Survey Data

Abstract
Based on data from the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey(CHARLS),this study employs a multi-level regression model to explore the evolution of educational inequality among siblings in rural families with multiple children and its heterogeneity among families.The results show that:first,over time,the disparity in educational outcomes among rural siblings has gradually narrowed,with educational attainment becoming increasingly equitable.Second,family background has a significant impact on the degree of educational inequality among rural siblings—families with higher wealth and parents with longer educational years tend to have lower levels of sibling educational inequality.Third,the equalization trend of sibling education in rural areas is moderated by family background:the slower the accumulation of family wealth,the faster the reduction in sibling educational inequality;similarly,the shorter the parents'educational years,the more rapid the decline in sibling educational inequality.Extending the research on educational inequality from the external family context to the intra-family dimension not only facilitates a comprehensive examination of the changes in educational inequality in contemporary rural China,but also helps understand the heterogeneous impacts of educational expansion policies on intra-family educational inequality.关键词
