Reading,Naming,Voicing:Identity Reconstruction and the Construction of a Community of Shared Destiny in James
摘要
Abstract
James is a re-writing of Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by African-American writer Percy W.Everett.In the original text,Jim was always in a state of speechlessness and unable to speakfor himself. However,in the re-written text, although Jim still faced the loss of his identity initially,he resisted it by inventing a unique language system and chose to burst out in silence, questioning the Western sages and chal-lenging the white hegemony. His outstandingreading and writing skills and his talent reflect his pursuit of identity and self-worth.On the escape jour-ney,Jim reached an agreement with many fellow members of his tribe and granted himself and others the right to have names, striving to break free from the identity of others and being marginalized. At the same time, whether in the original text or the re-written text, the friendship between Jim and Huck symbolizes the connection of multinational tribes and the constructionof a community of destiny.Everett, through a complete subversion of the o-riginal text, delicately depicted the process of a black figure struggling against an ugly image, and contains his expectations for racial reconciliation. At the end of the novel, when Jim finally returned to his birthplace and called himself James, his identity was finally reshaped.关键词
