Perioperative management of cataract surgery in patients with retinitis pigmentosa

Abstract
Retinitis pigmentosa(RP)is an inherited retinal degenerative disease.Typical fundus changes associated with RP are characterized by bone-spicule-shaped pigment deposits,attenuated retinal vessels,and a waxy-pale appearance of the optic nerve.These changes lead to a range of visual impairments,including night blindness,vision loss,progressive loss of the peripheral visual field.Cataract is one of the most frequently occurring complications in patients with RP.It typically presents posterior subcapsular opacification,which can severely affect vision and often necessitates surgical intervention.However,RP patients frequently exihibit anatomical abnormalities,such as zonular dialysis or dehiscence,a shallow anterior chamber,and a narrow anterior chamber angle.These abnormalities place them a higher risk of developing angle closure glaucoma.Performing phacoemulsification in these patients is highly challenging,as there is a high incidence of complications.Moreover,the prognosis for visual acuity is often poor and difficult to predict precisely.In this review,we provide a comprehensive summary of the clinical characteristics of RP patients.We also conduct a thorough review of the preoperative evaluation process,preventive strategies for surgical complications,and postoperative follow-up procedure for cataract patients with RP.Our aim is to offer practical guidance for clinical practice.关键词
