Enhancing the Sense of Community for the Chinese Nation Research:Chang'an Index
摘要
Abstract
The sense of community for the Chinese nation(SCCN)serves as the foundation for China's national unity,ethnic solidarity,and soul of spiritual strength.Strengthening the SCCN is the main theme of the Communist Party of China's(CPC)ethnic work and the central focus of all endeavors in ethnic regions in the new era.This paper presents key ideas behind a SCCN index,named"Chang'an Index"(or Eternal Index),which embodies the aspiration for eternal peace and everlasting stability of the Chinese nation.The goal of constructing this index and its indicator system is to collect primary data through online surveys of WeChat users from a vantage point of sociological theory of connectedness,measuring the dynamic changes in interactions,exchanges,and integration among all ethnic groups nationwide.It aims to identify potential issues,predict future trends,provide theoretical and data support for the construction of a unified community of the Chinese nation,and in such ways offer a quantitative toolkit for advancing the CPC's ethnic work in the new era. The creation of the"Chang'an Index"is based on a profound understanding of General Secretary Xi Jinping's comment on the communication,integration,and all-round mutual embedding among ethnic groups,exploring a scientific and accurate index system used to monitor and evaluate ethnic relations,and consciously serving the high-quality development of the Party's ethnic work in the new era.This index system overcomes existing research deficiencies from three aspects.One is to identify mechanisms of"three exchanges"and"mutual embedding"between and among ethnic groups,which will help evaluate both the current situation and dynamic changes of ethnic relations and help governments at all levels to design and improve their ethnic work tasks.The second is to collect first-hand survey data and construct a multi-dimensional quantitative model,which is beneficial for analyzing the influencing factors,regional differences,and developmental trends that strengthen the sense of community of the Chinese nation,thus making the"Chang'an Index"a barometer of ethnic relations in China.The third is to use the data of the"Chang'an Index"to conduct cross-national research,to effectively tell the story of the Chinese national community,and to use objective and quantitative data to refute the malicious distortion and"deliberate stigmatization"of China's national policies by Western extreme politicians,bad media,and biased views. The theoretical basis of the"Chang'an Index"is the relational perspective of sociological theory.This perspective can be viewed and elaborated from the generation of interpersonal ties,the maintenance of social networks,and the relational mobilization of social capital,which all contribute to the underlying mechanisms of the Chinese national community.Its design of multiple indicators is based on the empirical and theoretical research results of sociology,ethnology,and anthropology on ethnic relations in China,aiming at the central goal of the enhancement of the sense of community for the Chinese nation,following the shared paradigm of empirical social sciences,and carrying out the measurement of all relevant variables and the design of questionnaire modules.Its research methods combine offline sampling and online survey,ensuring sample representativeness while achieving research timeliness and flexibility in multiple waves of a longitudinal research project.It is methodologically innovative in how to conduct social science research in the era of big data and AI. The"Chang'an Index"project was launched in the autumn of 2023,and by the end of 2025 it had completed a baseline survey in 28 provinces/municipolities/autonomous regions across the country,collecting first-hand data from 570,000 adult WeChat users.Currently,four sub-indices have been constructed,namely the"Multi embedding Index","Micro three exchanges Index","Commonality Index",and"Social Distance Index".关键词
