Abstract

Shape memory epoxy resins are receiving considerable attention in aerospace and biomedical fields.Addressing challenges such as high brittleness and insufficient elongation at break,this study draws inspiration from the alternating'soft-hard'structure of fish spines.We propose a biomimetic network design strategy based on cardanol/phenol condensation,preparing phenolic epoxy resins(PER)where the benzene ring serves as a rigid backbone(fixed phase)and the C15 side chain of cardanol enhances toughness(reversible phase).Subsequently,through blending with bisphenol A epoxy resin(E51)and using a cardanol-based phenolic amine curing agent(718A),we achieved a bio-based shape memory epoxy resin material(SMER)with high strength and toughness.The molecular structure and morphology of the SMER were characterized by FTIR,SEM,and AFM.The study investigated the effects of material ratios and reaction times on SMER performance.The results showed that by adjusting the molar ratio of cardanol,phenol,and formaldehyde to 1∶1∶1.4 and conducting a 6-hour condensation reaction,phenolic resin was synthesized.The resulting epoxy-modified phenolic resin,blended with epoxy resin E51 at a mass ratio of 1∶0.3,yielded SMER with a tensile strength of 8.05 MPa and a fracture elongation of 115%.Compared to literature-reported shape memory epoxy resins enhanced with flexible side chains of cardanol,the fracture elongation was increased tenfold under similar strength conditions.The designed biomimetic structure material inspired by fish spine provides innovative insights for developing high-strength and tough SMER,contributing to the sustainable development of the next generation of shape memory materials.
