Abstract

Alumina(Al2O3)is widely used to enhance the thermal conductivity of polymer composites due to its high thermal conductivity,excellent electrical insulation,and chemical stability.However,high-filled Al2O3 is difficult to disperse in the polymer matrix and suffers from poor interfacial compatibility,which poses challenges to material processing and performance improvement.This study focuses on a high-loading[85.7%(mass)]Al2O3/polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)system.A twin-screw extruder was employed to intensify mixing and improve processing efficiency.Furthermore,to enhance interfacial compatibility between Al2O3 and PDMS and simultaneously boost the thermal conductivity of Al2O3,modified holey graphene oxide(M-HGO)was coated onto the Al2O3 surface via covalent grafting.The results demonstrated that the Al2O3/PDMS composite prepared by continuous extrusion using the twin-screw extruder(mixing time about 5 min)achieved a thermal conductivity of 1.87 W·m-1·K-1,comparable to the performance of composites mixed for 30 min using a torque rheometer mixer.In contrast,effective mixing could not be achieved even after 1 h of manual stirring,yielding a thermal conductivity of only 1.50 W·m-1·K-1.Furtherly,hybrid filler containing 5 μm and 20 μm Al2O3 was used to reinforce PDMS,and acyl chloride-modified M-HGO was covalently grafted onto amino-modified Al2O3(M-Al2O3).After thermal reduction,the M-Al2O3@rM-HGO composite filler was prepared.M-Al2O3@0.4%rM-HGO/PDMS by twin-screw extruder mixing exhibited a thermal conductivity of 2.64 W·m-1·K-1.This represents a 23.4%improvement over composites filled with pristine Al2O3 and outperforms composites containing GO-physically coated Al2O3 or traditionally silane coupling agent-modified Al2O3.Additionally,M-Al2O3@0.4%rM-HGO/PDMS exhibited a tensile strength of 1.75 MPa,which was higher than that of composites containing unmodified Al2O3 and Al2O3 modified by other methods.
