Abstract

In order to improve the energy absorption performance of thin-walled structures under inclined loading conditions,a gradient-thickness multi-cell hierarchical square tube(GHST)design was proposed.Single-cell and multi-cell hierarchical square tubes(HSTs)were fabricated using 3D printing technology,and quasi-static compression tests were conducted to assess their energy absorption performance.Numerical simulations were carried out using ABAQUS/Explicit to validate the feasibility of the proposed models.Based on the principle of equal mass,the effects of loading angle,foam aluminum filling density,and wall thickness on the collapse modes and energy absorption characteristics of the hierarchical thin-walled square tubes were systematically investigated.The results indicate that the HST exhibits progressive stable folding deformation under 0°and 10°inclined loads.But under 20° to 40° inclined loads,the structure experiences Euler buckling failure and collapse,leading to a substantial decrease in performance.The GHST effectively suppresses flexural failure,at loading angles of 0°,10°,20°,30°and 40°,its energy absorption performance exhibits relative variation rates of-5.35%,-3.36%,37.39%,26.20%and 23.34%in sequence compared with the HST.Under different foam aluminum density conditions,the total energy absorption and collapse force efficiency of the GHST are maximized,showing increases of 25.02%and 16.68%,respectively.When varying wall thicknesses are considered,the total energy absorption and collapse force efficiency exhibit the largest improvements of 37.39%and 57.76%,respectively.Overall,the gradient-thickness hierarchical square tube demonstrates a remarkable enhancement in both energy absorption performance and load-bearing capacity when subjected to inclined loading,compared to the uniformly thick hierarchical square tube.
