Abstract

During the formation of Brinell hardness indentation,the indentation depth remained stable after the removal of the test force.The method for calculating Brinell hardness based on indentation depth was explored and investigated.This method could avoid the errors incurred when measuring indentation diameter with an optical system,which not only helped to overcome the drawback of poor comparability in test results of rapid indentation(Brinell-type)hardness testers,but also enhanced the efficiency of measuring indentations diameter for Brinell hardness testing machines after conventional tests.The test was conducted by replacing the original Rockwell hardness indenter with a Brinell hardness indenter of 2.5 mm in diameter,and the final Brinell hardness value was calculated through a series of equation fitting methods.The results show that the method of measuring Brinell indentation depth by using a Rockwell hardness tester equipped with a Brinell indenter was feasible.Although there was a certain deviation in the hardness value calculated by the fitting equations,the overall matching degree was satisfactory.
