The Evolutionary of Intergenerational Division of Housework in Contemporary Chinese Families:The Mutual Construction of Filial Piety Order and Resource Negotiation

Abstract
Against the backdrop of rapid transformation of social population and economy,China's multigenerational co-residence pattern has remained stable and exhibits distinctive forms of intergenerational housework division.However,little research has examined the characteristics and evolving patterns of such intergenerational divisions of housework.This study focuses on multi-generational families where elderly couples live with their married children in the context of China,which explores the changing trends of intergenerational division of housework and the underlying micro and macro mechanisms.Using six waves(2010-2022)of the China Family Panel Studies,we apply the Hierarchical Age-Period-Cohort Growth Curve Model(HAPC-GCM)and the triple Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition to analyze the changing trajectory and cohort differences of intergenerational division of housework in the life course of the elderly.The findings show as follows:Firstly,older female cohorts experience a significantly steeper decline in housework time with age than younger female cohorts,which aligns with the gradual transformation of filial piety and patriarchal systems from traditional hierarchical order to modern equal negotiation in Chinese families.Secondly,in the younger cohorts,the proportion of housework time of elderly women compared to their married daughters is not only relatively low but also shows a smaller increase with the age of the elderly women.This trend mainly results from the structural differences in relative resources and available time among families of elderly women from different birth cohorts.Thirdly,in multi-generational co-residence families,the housework burden of daughters-in-law is consistently higher than that of daughters,and the difference becomes more pronounced as the elderly parents grow older,especially in the older cohort.This difference reflects the combined influence of traditional patriarchal structures,parent-child relationships,living choices,and economic dependence.Overall,this study provides new prospectives and empirical evidence for understanding the transformation of intergenerational relations and their underlying mechanisms in contemporary Chinese multigenerational co-residence families.关键词
