Effects of water level fluctuation and land use type on soil heavy metal contents in the water-level fluctuation zone of the Meixi River in the Three Gorges Reservoir

Abstract
The water level fluctuation directly drives soil biogeochemical cycling process in the water-level fluctuation zone(WLFZ),while land use which is a main form of human activities also has an important impact on soil ecosystem.To understand the effect of water level fluctuation and land use type on soil heavy metal contents in the WLFZ,fourteen soil heavy metals(As,Cr,Cd,Zn,Cu,Hg,Ni,Pb,Pt,Sb,Sn,Tl,Bi,Co)from different elevation gradients and land use types were systematically studied by the method of in-situ survey and monitoring in Meixi River,a core area of the Three Gorges Reservoir(TGR),using the lakeside zone as the control.The results showed that:(1)The coefficient of variation of soil heavy metal content in the WLFZ of Meixi River ranged from 0.13 to 0.66.Except for soil Hg,As,and Cd content,which exceeded the soil background value of the TGR area,other soil heavy metal contents were generally at a low-risk level of pollution.(2)Water level fluctuation significantly affected the contents of soil As,Cr,Cd,Cu,Sb,and Tl in the WLFZ(P<0.05).Compared with the non-flooded control zone,most heavy metal contents of different soil layers increased in the WLFZ,and heavy metal contents of surface soil were mainly affected by the duration of flooding,while that of subsurface soil were primarily affected by the depth of soil layer.(3)Land use type had a certain degree of impact on soil heavy metal content in the WLFZ,with the effect differing by soil layer.Compared with natural grassland and farmland,artificial forest land in the WLFZ was generally good for reducing soil heavy metal accumulation.(4)There were significant interactive effects of water level fluctuation and land use type on contents of soil As,Cr,Pb,and Sb in the WLFZ(P<0.05).Although interactive effects on soil Co,Cd,Tl,Sn,Zn,and Cu were also observed,they were not significant(P>0.05).These findings provide important scientific insights for WLFZ ecosystem restoration and land use management and sustainable development in the Three Gorges Reservoir.关键词
