Abstract

[Purposes]The kinematic properties of coral sand particle clouds are a crucial component of sediment research.Given significant differences between coral sand and quartz sand,this paper aims to investigate the applicability of existing sediment motion formulas to coral sand.[Methods]Coral sand with different particle sizes was selected for hydrostatic diffusion experiments on particle groups to study the evolution characteristics of coral sand particle clouds in water.[Results]By discussing the influence of various factors on the evolution characteristics of clouds,it is found that air release height,particle size,release mass,and nozzle diameter all influence the evolution of coral sand particle clouds.Based on the experimental data,prediction formulas for frontal velocity and cloud width applicable to coral sand particle clouds are proposed.[Conclusions]The characteristics of coral sand particle clouds in water,such as frontal velocity,frontal position,and cloud width,exhibit certain differences from those of quartz sand.Variation in release height intensifies the instability of the jet front,which significantly affects the cloud width,but the frontal velocity and frontal position do not change significantly.
