摘要
Abstract
Nature,as a leading international scientific journal, publishes advanced scientific and technological research while actively promoting original science fiction novels through its Futures column. The scientific perspective of these science fiction novels reflects,to a certain extent, the mainstream scientific community's attitude towards science, and has important research value. As an emerging science fiction sub-genre,engineering science fiction(ESF),by constructing a future or otherworldly technological background, deeply explores the profound impact of engineering practices and technological innovations on the social structure, cultural patterns and human lifestyles, and inspires readers to think deeply about science and technology and humanistic concerns and resonate with their values. However, most of the existing studies focus on the thematic analysis of Nature's science fiction or the study of the significance of the history of science, and there is a lack of in-depth analysis of the connotation and specific manifestation of its scientific perspective of ESF.
This study focuses on 36 ESF published by Nature in 2023,employing textual analysis and case study method to decode their scientific perspective through three interconnected themes:human survival challenges, human alienation phenomenon, and moral-ethical dilemmas.
It is found that these novels not only depict an ideal picture of engineering practice, but also reflect deeply and critically on its potential risks, presenting a complex ambivalent attitude.Through representative cases, the analysis reveals a core contradiction:engineering systems often prioritize instrumental rationality—emphasizing efficiency and technical optimization—over value rationality, which prioritizes ethical and humanistic considerations. This structural imbalance manifests in narratives that critique short-term technical gains at the expense of long-term ecological and social consequences,as well as profit-driven projects that exploit technology without ethical accountability. These stories underscore the systemic failures inherent in modern engineering practices.
Its core scientific perspective is embodied in the rational reconstruction of the engineering system and the return of value, with the former advocating the realization of dynamic adaptive transformation of the engineering system and the latter emphasizing the construction of human subjectivity. To address these challenges, these ESF propose rational reconstruction of engineering systems through dynamic adaptive frameworks. This approach integrates multidisciplinary inputs and iterative feedback loops to manage complexity and uncertainty.By advocating for redundancy and human-centered adaptability, the narratives highlight the dangers of rigid technical designs and the need for flexible, responsive systems.Concurrently, value return necessitates institutionalizing ethical priorities. This includes embedding emotional algorithms in AI systems to balance efficiency with compassion,as well as questioning the ethical limits of technologies that replicate human relationships through data.
Beyond theoretical critique,Nature's ESF serve as a powerful tool for science communication.By dramatizing conflicts between technological ambition and societal values, these narratives engage the public in debates on issues like algorithmic dependency, ecological sustainability, and the commodification of human identity.Such stories bridge the gap between scientific innovation and public discourse, fostering a critical understanding of technology's societal role. The study concludes that engineering systems must harmonize technical progress with humanistic priorities. These insights not only enrich academic debates on engineering ethics but also offer actionable guidance for policymakers.Ultimately,Nature's ESF narrative function as both a cautionary mirror and a visionary compass, urging a redefinition of engineering's role in advancing equitable and sustainable civilizations.关键词
