Characteristics of wind dynamic environment over typical underlying surfaces in the Ulan Buh Desert

Abstract
Based on simultaneous gradient observations of wind speed and direction across three types of underlying surfaces(desert,desert-oasis ecotone,and oasis)in the northeastern Ulan Buh Desert,this study analyzes the characteristics of the wind energy environment over different underlying surfaces.The findings aim to support strategies for mitigating sand and dust hazards in the region.The results indicate that:)In desert,desert-oasis ecotone and oasis,the frequency of sand-moving winds is generally higher in winter and spring and lower in summer and autumn.As wind speed increases,the frequency of sand-moving winds progressively decreases.2)The three types of underlying surfaces all experience prevailing westerly winds,though wind direction varies more significantly in desert and desert-oasis ecotone,while remaining more consistent in the oasis area.3)The three underlying surfaces exhibit distinct annual sand transport potentials.Both the desert and desert-oasis ecotone are characterized by an intermediate wind energy environment,with sand transport potentials of 228.45 VU and 231.87 VU,respectively.In contrast,the oasis exhibits a low wind energy environment,with a sand transport potential of only 61.85 VU.Seasonal patterns also differ significantly:in the desert and desert-oasis ecotone,sand transport peaks in spring,followed by autumn,winter,and summer.However,the oasis shows the highest sand transport in winter,then autumn,spring,and summer.Additionally,wind direction variability plays a key role.The desert and desert-oasis ecotone experience highly variable wind directions,leading to complex sand movement patterns.The oasis,by comparison,has a more consistent wind direction,resulting in relatively uniform sand transport.A comprehensive analysis of wind patterns and sand transport potential in the study area should be conducted through long-term,fixed-point monitoring of aeolian activity.This will provide a scientific basis for protecting the oasis and mitigating sand hazards in the Ulan Buh Desert.关键词
