Spatiotemporal evolution and genesis of the minimum magnitude of completeness in Shandong Province

Abstract
To address the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of the earthquake catalog in Shandong,China,this study establishes a segmented framework based on temporal dimension(seismic network stages)and spatial dimension(tectonic zones).By integrating multiple methods,such as the magnitude-frequency,magnitude-rank,maximum curvature,and b-value stability techniques,we systematically quantified how segmentation strategies affect the estimation of the minimum magnitude of completeness(Mc).Analysis of 34 414 seismic events from 1970 to 2025 shows that multi-dimensional segmentation reduces estimation error of Mc by 30%to 50%.The correlation coefficients between each methods and a composite benchmark all exceeded 70%.Furthermore,the study reveals differential sensitivity of different estimation methods to segmented data,offering a more reliable methodological foundation for regional seismic activity analysis and hazard assessment.关键词
