Abstract

The seafloor acoustic model and its properties significantly influence sound propagation characteristics and sonar detection performance in shallow water environments.Large-scale seafloor models and their associated acoustic parameters are typi-cally obtained through acoustic inversion techniques.This paper presents a stepwise inversion strategy that utilizes the vertical direc-tivity of ambient ocean noise to progressively determine both the seabed acoustic model and its parameters.By extracting information about the total-reflection critical angle from the vertical directivity pattern of ambient ocean noise,the number of critical angles is used to identify the presence of sediment layers,thereby enabling appropriate selection of seabed acoustic models.This approach provides a theoretical foundation for simplifying the complexity of seabed acoustic parameter inversion methods.Numerical simula-tions demonstrate the feasibility of this method in distinguishing between layered seabed models with soft sediment layers and semi-infinite bottom models.The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is further verified through sea trial data.
