Abstract

This study explored the impact of college students' perceived severity on bystander helping willingness in cyberbullying situations and its underlying psychological mechanisms.A simulated cyberbullying scenario was set up,and 1 022 college students were surveyed using the Perceived Severity Scale,the Bystander Helping Willingness Scale,the Perceived Responsibility Scale,and the Defensive Self-efficacy Scale.The results showed that:1)Perceived severity could significantly and positively predict bystander helping willingness.2)Perceived responsibility played a partial mediating role between perceived severity and bystander helping willingness.3)Defensive self-efficacy moderated the relationship between perceived severity and perceived responsibility.Specifically,when defensive self-efficacy was higher,the predictive effect of perceived severity on perceived responsibility was stronger.The research concludes that in cyberbullying situations,bystanders' perceived severity not only directly affects their helping willingness but also indirectly influences it through perceived responsibility.Defensive self-efficacy moderates the first half of this mediating pathway.
