Practical Paths for Public Art Intervention in Urban Micro-regeneration:A Case Study based on a Mural in Zhuguang Street,Guangzhou
摘要
Abstract
As urban regeneration shifts from large-scale development involving demolitions of existing stock to stock improvement, renewal practices are moving towards small-scale,incremental,and community-oriented approaches.Within this context,low-cost,visually accessible public art has been widely employed to enhance street interfaces, activate underused spaces, and reshape the sense of place. However, current practices face three interrelated challenges:many projects remain superficial, with artistic content detached from local life;public participation is often confined to short-term events, limiting opportunities for sustained collaboration;and the absence of clear maintenance responsibilities and institutional support frequently leads to the deterioration or replacement of works once initial attention fades. These issues suggest that public art intervention in micro-renewal is not merely about spatial improvement but also a complex process involving cultural translation,multi-actor collaboration, and long-term governance. An urgent re-organization of practice paths is required. Based on Evans and Shaw's framework of cultural engagement in urban regeneration, this study develops an analytical framework centered on cultural embedding and community participation. The framework encompasses local culture,multi-actor interactions, and institutional mechanisms, and analyzes murals from three dimensions.Firstly, the creation content emphasizes the expression of local culture regarding space, time, and society.Secondly,it emphasizes the collaborative structures of government, enterprises, residents, and university teams, highlighting the mediating role of university teams in translating agendas, refining design proposals, and facilitating co-creation.Finally,mechanisms are built and maintained from the perspectives of consensus, action, and organization. On this basis,an eight-year-old mural in Zhuguang Street,Yuexiu District,Guangzhou, was investigated using the action research approach. The university team participated in the entire painting process as both actors and researchers, analyzing the mural by combining process documentation, visual records, media reports, interviews, and follow-up visits. According to research findings, the mural's longevity and impact derive from the formation of linkages across three dimensions:content, action, and institutional. At the content level,Lingnan cultural symbols, local language, and collective memory were integrated into visual narration and spatial design, combining global environmental protection with local culture, enhancing residents'emotional identification with work and space, and improving the legibility of residents as a medium of public expression. At the action level, the university team plays a crucial mediating role.On the one hand,it translates governmental and corporate agendas into implementable designs. On the other hand,it organizes participatory workshops that incorporate community knowledge and facilitate coordination in property negotiation and on-site implementation. At the institutional level, the mural was gradually embedded into neighborhood renewal plans through ongoing consensus-building,thereby supporting its maintenance and integration into long-term development visions. Through a case study on a mural in Zhuguang Street, this study deepens the understanding of public art as a practice path of"culture and renewal".It summarizes feasible experiences for public art interventions in micro-renewal.Finally,it provides references for fostering more vibrant and sustainable urban public spaces.关键词
