Abstract

To elucidate the friction characteristics of machine-picked seed cotton,a self-developed friction testing apparatus was taken,combined test plans of three moisture content levels and three contact surface materials were designed to investigate the effects of moisture content,contact surface material and their interaction on static and dynamic friction coefficients between seed cotton and contact surfaces.The results demonstrated that different factors exhibited consistent influence patterns on both static and dynamic friction coefficients.Contact surface material and moisture content of seed cotton showed extremely significant influence(P<0.001).Furthermore,their interaction presented highly significant(0.001≤P<0.01)and significant influence(0.01≤P<0.05),the order of single factors influence from major to minor was contact surface material,moisture content.The static and dynamic friction coefficients between seed cotton and contact surface was increased with the increase in moisture content of seed cotton.In the interaction effect,different contact surface materials caused the moisture content of seed cotton affected its friction coefficient.The order of influence from major to minor was seed cotton,belt and stainless steel plate.The static friction coefficient between seed cotton and seed cotton ranged from 0.708 2 to 0.741 3,and the dynamic friction coefficient ranged from 0.637 1 to 0.650 1.The static friction coefficient between seed cotton and belt ranged from 0.399 1 to 0.412 8,and the dynamic friction coefficient ranged from 0.357 7 to 0.365 5.The static friction coefficient between seed cotton and stainless steel plate ranged from 0.131 3 to 0.133 6,and the dynamic friction coefficient ranged from 0.123 6 to 0.125 7.It is considered that the research findings can be applied to the study and design of machinery involved in the mechanized harvesting,storage,transportation and processing of seed cotton.
