Individual life cycle,family structure,and remittance decision-making:a multi-case study of the migrant workers in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region

Abstract
With the social transformationfrom a"rural society"to a"rural-urban society"in China,the remittance behaviors of mi-grant workers have exhibited new characteristics of diversified remittance methods but a declining willingness to remit.Addition-ally,the classic theories on remittance behaviors among international migrants cannot fully explain the choices of migrant workers in China.This study,based on field survey in four cities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region,constructs a more contextually grounded analytical framework from the"individual life cycle-family structure"interactive perspective.It reveals that in addition to the three classic motivations of egoism,altruism,and co-insurance,gratitude,precautionary savings,and providing support for left-behind family members are also common motivations for migrant workers in China.It also proposes four policy recommenda-tions:further promoting the reform of the household registration system,effectively safeguarding the legitimate rights and inter-ests of migrant workers,introducing remittance software tailored for migrant workers,and continuing to promote county-level de-velopment and"urbanization on the spot".关键词
