Study on Traffic Operation Status and Geometric Dimensions of Left Merging Zones at Urban Interchanges

Abstract
In some cities,the road interchange construction is constrained by land use restrictions.Adopting a left-entry configuration can avoid land use limitations,reduce project costs,and minimize unnecessary detours.Howev-er,there are few provisions for the layout and minimum length of left-entry acceleration lanes in relevant current Chinese standards.Based on field survey data,this study analyzed the speed characteristics of passenger vehicles at the typical cross-section of acceleration lanes in left-entry merging zones of urban interchanges,and confirmed that the time headway in the leftmost lane of the main line follows a log-normal distribution.Considering the acceleration behavior,lane-changing patterns,and visual characteristics of passenger vehicles at the tapered section,an opti-mal left-entry acceleration lane configuration was proposed,and an acceleration lane length calculation model was built.Through calibration of key parameters of the acceleration lane length,the minimum recommended length for left-entry acceleration lanes was proposed.The research findings indicate that a parallel configuration is preferable for left-entry acceleration lanes.The minimum length depends not only on the main line design speed but also on the ramp design speed,which should be designed comprehensively by both.关键词
