The Building of a Heterogeneous Actants Network:Innovative Pathways and Profound Implications of Elizabeth Wichmann-Walczak's International Promotion of Jingju
摘要
Abstract
Using Actor-Network Theory(ANT)as its core theoretical framework,this study aims to move beyond the traditional paradigm of individual"cultural translation"and provides an in-depth analysis of the"teaching-research-translation-performance"dissemination system of Jingju established by Professor Elizabeth Wichmann-Walczak at the University of Hawaii.It is found that the success of Wichmann's"English-language Jingju"is not merely the simple cross-context transfer of cultural content.Rather,its essence lies in the core actor,Wichmann,who,through over four decades of sustained"translation"work,successfully enrolled and mobilized a diverse array of heterogeneous elements,including human actants,such as Chinese Jingju artists and American university students,and non-human actants,such as English scripts,Jingju costumes and props,the performance techniques of"four skills and five methods",and university institutions.All these together constructed a stable,efficient,and synergistic innovative communication network.In the description of the construction,translation,and stabilization mechanisms of this network,this research reveals an innovative pathway for the international communication of Chinese culture,one based on"network ecology building"rather than"content and text output".It offers a novel theoretical perspective and analytical framework for understanding the complex practices of cross-cultural communication.Furthermore,it reflects upon and expands the application of ANT in the field of cultural communication and enlightens the dissemination of fine traditional Chinese culture from"making known"to"being accepted"in the new era.关键词
