Abstract

As a key technology driving socioeconomic transformation,artificial intelligence has an in-creasingly significant impact on environmental performance,making it of great practical significance to explore its green effects.Using panel data from 281 prefecture-level cities from 2014 to 2023 and em-ploying a two-way fixed effects model,this study examines the impact of artificial intelligence levels on carbon emission inequality.The results show that artificial intelligence levels can significantly alleviate carbon emission inequality,and this finding is robust;coordinated emission reduction,green innovation,and high-carbon agglomeration density are important pathways through which artificial intelligence alle-viates carbon emission inequality.Heterogeneity analysis indicates that the mitigating effect of artificial intelligence levels on carbon emission inequality is more pronounced in non-resource-based cities and regions with high environmental awareness.Furthermore,artificial intelligence level has a negative spa-tial spillover effect on carbon emission inequality in neighboring cities.Therefore,the development of artificial intelligence is an important driving force in alleviating regional carbon emission inequality,and policymakers should strengthen inter-regional collaborative governance to fully leverage its positive spatial spillover effects.
