Abstract

Recently,a large-scale pig farm in Yunnan experienced an increasing number of pigs exhibiting neurological symptoms and lameness,suspected to be caused by Streptococcus suis infection.This led to a rise in the culling rate,negatively impacting the farm's production efficiency.To identify the cause as soon as possible,brain,lung,and joint fluid samples were collected from diseased pigs in different barns for bacterial isolation and identification,16S rRNA amplicon sequencing,16S rRNA sequence determination of isolated strains,drug susceptibility testing,and serotyping.The results showed that five strains of Streptococcus suis were isolated from five samples.16S rRNA amplicon sequencing revealed that the V3~V4 region sequences of Streptococcus suis in brain tissues from six pigs with neurological symptoms accounted for 93%of the effective sequences,indicating that Streptococcus was the dominant bacterium in the brain tissues of affected pigs.Drug susceptibility testing showed that the five Streptococcus suis strains were sensitive to enrofloxacin and amoxicillin.Serotyping identified three strains as Streptococcus suis type 4 and two strains as type 5.The study showed that the three isolated strains of Streptococcus suis type 4 and the two strains of Streptococcus suis type 5 were all sensitive to amoxicillin and enrofloxacin.
