Timetable Optimization for Suspended Low-Speed Maglev Trains with Passenger-Freight Mixed Operation

Abstract
Suspended low-speed maglev is a novel urban rail transit mode that enables the flexible coupling of passenger and freight carriages,offering a dual-purpose transport characteristic suitable for both passengers and goods.To enhance its transport efficiency,this paper investigated the train timetable optimization problem by considering the timeliness differences between passenger and freight demands and the impact of freight handling on station dwell time.A nonlinear optimization model for coordinated passenger-freight timetabling was developed,aiming to minimize the weighted sum of passenger waiting time,freight delivery delay,and unfulfilled freight volume.The model incorporated constraints related to train arrival and departure times,timetable coordination,train formation,train capacity,total freight volume,and freight handling operations.To solve the model efficiently,linearization techniques were applied to the time-indexed sets,max functions,and quadratic terms,transforming the model into a mixed-integer programming model.Small-scale and large-scale case studies demonstrate that,compared to a passenger-only operation scenario,the optimized scheme reduces the average passenger waiting time by 8.5%and 15.8%,respectively,while accomplishing the transport of 257 and 368 freight containers.The results provide a practical reference for the formulation and optimization of maglev train operation plans.关键词
