Abstract

To investigate the effects of magnesium fertilizer application on grape yield and quality in calcareous soils,a two-year field experiment was conducted in Shihezi region using two grape varieties of'Red Globe'and'Ugni Blanc'.Four magnesium oxide(MgO)fertilizer application rates were established:MgO 0 kg/hm2(S0),7.5 kg/hm2(S7.5),15 kg/hm2(S15),and 30 kg/hm2(S30).The experimental results demonstrated that over the two-year period,both cultivars exhibited significant yield increases with rising magnesium application levels.The yield increments ranged from 7.85%-21.94%for'Red Globe'and 4.71%-25.20%for'Ugni Blanc'compared to the control treatment(S0)(P<0.05).For'Red Globe'grapes,critical quality parameters including soluble solids content,soluble sugar content,skin hardness,flesh hardness,and sugar-to-acid ratio initially increased then decreased with magnesium application,showing significant differences compared to S0(P<0.05).Titratable acidity displayed an inverse trend,initially decreasing before rising.Moderate magnesium application enhanced fruit color characteristics,increased the brightness(L* value by 4.3%)and red chroma(a* value by 6.7%).Quadratic regression model analysis revealed optimal MgO application ranges of MgO being 18.13-23.14 kg/hm2 for'Red Globe'and 17.55-17.75 kg/hm2 for'Ugni Blanc'in this calcareous soil region.These findings provided scientific references for magnesium fertilizer management in viticulture practices within Xinjiang's calcareous soil areas.
