Abstract

Thermochromic materials,as a class of intelligent substances capable of altering color in response to external temperature changes,demonstrate growing application potential in fields such as medical monitoring and safety alerts,driven by advancements in smart textile technology.Their use holds particular significance for vulnerable groups like infants,where non-intrusive,real-time physiological monitoring is of substantial practical value.This study systematically investigates the integration of thermochromic materials into smart infant clothing,focusing on the technical implementation of color-changing functionality,comprehensive performance evaluation,and user-centered design translation. Cotton fabrics served as the base material and were treated using two distinct thermochromic finishing processes immersion and coating.A thorough evaluation of the processed fabrics was conducted,encompassing color-changing properties transition temperature,color vividness,and recovery time,physical characteristics fabric weight,thickness air permeability,and moisture permeability,color fastness to soaping and rubbing,mechanical properties breaking force,and elongation at break,as well as subjective handle and safety assessments.Results indicated a complementary performance profile between the two methods.Fabrics finished via the coating method exhibited more vivid colors,sharper color transition boundaries,higher visual saliency,and superior air permeability.In contrast,fabrics treated with the immersion method demonstrated better color fastness,enhanced tensile properties,and improved handle,suggesting greater durability and wear comfort.Consequently,the coating method is more suitable for applications requiring strong visual feedback,such as warning indicators,while the immersion method is better suited for everyday garments prioritizing comfort. For application design,this study proposed three integration strategies for thermochromic fabrics in infant clothing including"printed patterns""incorporation into sewing threads"and"localized/accessory applications"based on actual infant care scenarios and caregiver concerns.These strategies were systematically evaluated using a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method.User interviews revealed that safety was the caregivers'paramount concern,leading to a higher acceptance of the"printed pattern"design,which minimizes direct skin contact with the dyes.The fuzzy evaluation further clarified that printed patterns based on the coating method scored highly in aesthetics and safety.The sewing thread integration,while offering good handle and durability,presented less visual impact and requires innovative design to enhance its recognizability.Localized and accessory applications,involving direct skin contact,demand stricter safety standards and higher process control for the dyes used. This study validates the technical feasibility of applying thermochromic fabrics to smart infant clothing through comparative process analysis and systematic design evaluation.Its main innovation lies in the user-driven translation of material functional properties into practical,implementable design recommendations.Future research should focus on first,developing gradient or composite finishing techniques that combine the immersion and coating methods to balance comfort with color-display effectiveness;second,further optimizing the durability and environmental stability of the thermochromic system to enhance product lifespan;and third,exploring the integration of thermochromic visual signals with flexible electronic sensors to create hybrid monitoring systems capable of both intuitive alerts and quantitative data logging.
