Development and application of Xiamen University trace element and isotope clean sampling system(TEISS)

Abstract
[Objective]For the purpose of addressing the challenges of ultra-low concentration of seawater trace elements,high contamination vulnerability,and inefficient throughput of traditional sampling methods,the first Chinese large-volume trace element and isotope clean sampling system(TEISS)has been developed to support the trace element biogeochemical research in the Western Pacific onboard research vessel Tan Kah Kee.[Methods]Integrating ultra-clean winches,Vectran conductive cables,trace element clean water samplers,and clean vans,we employ TEISS to enable contamination-free sampling of trace elements throughout 6 000 m depth.Both non-metallic designs for seawater-contact components and a modular architecture ensure the compatibility of TEISS on multiple research vessels.[Results]Two previously conducted sea trials have demonstrated the efficiency of TEISS in collecting trace element clean seawater samples.Quality control results support TEISS's ability of collecting clean samples and the low procedure blanks of the laboratory analysis protocol,with detection limits meeting requisition of international communities.A high consistency in dissolved iron measurements with those from GEOMAR and the University of Southern California(USC)is observed,thus validating the system's reliability.We(the Marine Biogeochemistry of Trace Elements Research Team in Xiamen University)have successfully completed high-resolution sampling at 49 clean stations and collected 1 381 water depths in the Western Pacific.This success reveals fine-scale distribution patterns of trace elements such as Fe,Cu,Cd,Ni,Pb,Co,etc.,and has obtained endorsement from the international biogeochemical cycles of trace elements and isotopes(GEOTRACES)program.[Conclusions]Successfully,TEISS overcomes technical bottlenecks in trace element sampling in China.Its modular design and rigorous quality control provide reliable technical support for trace element investigations on the trace element biogeochemistry in global oceans.关键词
