Press Portrayals of the Summer Palace:The Narrative and Cultural Politics of the Chengde Mountain Resort in Republic of China Era Newspapers(1912-1949)

Abstract
As an important summer palace of the Qing dynasty,the Chengde Mountain Resort witnessed many historical events.It gradually declined in the late years of the Qing dynasty,and became a public institution after the Republic of China(ROC)was founded.This article reviews news reports,commentaries,and travel logs about the resort from ROC-era newspapers to explore how its identity,public image,and cultural meaning changed during this time.Xiong Xiling decided to open the resort to the public.However,during his term,the resort suffered from poor protection and many culture relics were lost.Later on,articles wrote about the resort in different ways were published in the newspaper,reflecting its shift from a royal garden to an open tourist attraction.Japan controlled the media to promote their cultural colonization after the occupation of Rehe.Chinese people fought back by publishing historical facts and pictures on newspaper,to defend the historical truth and protect the resort as Chinese cultural heritage.These articles showed a detailed story about the resort,and illustrated a vivid scene of how the resort's cultural meaning was formed,how it changed,and how it was defended.关键词
