William Stanton:The First Translator and Researcher of Cantonese Opera in the West
摘要
Abstract
Due to the translation and research of William Stanton,Westerners were aware of Cantonese Opera as a form of the Chinese Theatre at a very early stage.Stanton was the first person in the West to investigate and research Cantonese Opera.He translated three Cantonese opera scripts,and these transla-tions presented the Cantonese opera in English very well.His research and introduction of Cantonese opera made westerners know Cantonese opera.In the present,scholars can learn about the state of Cantonese opera in history through his works.Therefore,Stanton was the most important Western scholar in the trans-lation and research of Cantonese opera in the latter half of the 19th century,and he played a significant role in introducing Chinese theater to the Western world.关键词
