Textual Research on Herb Origin of Aicao(Artemisia Argyi)

Abstract
The origin of Aicao(Artemisia argyi)first appeared under the alias of"Bingtai"in the Shi Jing(Book of Songs).During the Qin and Han periods,Aicao gradually became interchangeable with Baihao(White mugwort).In Ming Yi Bie Lun of the Wei and Jin dynasties,it was first recorded that using leaves of Aicao as the medicinal part and distinguished them from Baihao.Later,in herbal works,the viewpoints of that in Ming Yi Bie Lun was basically followed and information on plant morphology,usage and efficacy,as well as dietary therapy was supplemented.During the Ming and Qing dynasties,descriptions of the original plant characteristics of the leaves of Aicao were detailed and illustrated clearly,providing important evidence for the subsequent identification of the original source of the leaves of Aicao.Today,Aicao(Artemisia argyi Lévl.et Vant.),a plant of the Asteraceae genus Artemisia,has been confirmed as the only original source of the leaves of Aicao.Aico leaves and Baihao were only mixed or used interchangeably during the Qin and Han pe-riods and slightly later;in subsequent herbal texts,Aicao and Baihao were always recorded separately,and their morphological character-istics,efficacy,and other properties differ.There are regional medicinal practices for using of Aicao leaves,primarily including wild hao,Mongolian hao,Kui hao,Korean Ai,and Red-footed hao,among others.Although the number of commonly used varieties is relatively large,they are all Asteraceae genus Artemisia plants.The close botanical relationship makes the morphology of Artemisia species quite similar,leading to the common folk practice of mixing or substituting leaves from the same genus for Ai leaves.The differences in chemi-cal composition and clinical efficacy between these herbs and genuine Ai leaves require further study.关键词
