Abstract

The formation of the cold water mass is an important seasonal hydrological phenomenon in the North Yellow Sea and affects hydrological and sedimentary environments through its spatiotemporal variations.However,only few studies have focused on its interannual variation characteristics.This study systematically investigated the three-dimensional variability in the North Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass(NYSCWM)based on 15 years(2010-2024)of continuous real-time hydrological ob-servations.Our findings revealed a persistent increasing trend in the bottom-layer temperature of the NYSCWM along with a decrease in the salinity.Influenced by global changes,the NYSCWM exhibited a reduction in the areal extent,whereas the thermocline intensity exhibited initial strengthening prior to weakening,resulting in an overall shoaling trend.This led to a sig-nificant increase in bottom turbidity in the central basin.Unlike previous studies that involved short-term surveys,single-station data,or sectional observations,this work leveraged long-term,spatially comprehensive in situ measurement data to delineate interannual variability in the NYSCWM.By extending beyond seasonal or episodic scales,our results provide a robust founda-tion for understanding the climate-driven evolution of the NYSCWM and offer critical insights into long-term changes in the water properties and sedimentary environments of the North Yellow Sea.
