Effect of ageing on psychological distress and healthy related quality of life:The mediating role of social participation

Abstract
Objective:To explore the association of age,social participation,psychological distress and healthy relat-ed quality of life(HRQoL)and to assess the mediating role of social participation between age and two healthy-re-lated outcome variables in a sample of non-clinical Chinese elder adults.Methods:A total of 1036(56.0％females)non-clinical elder adults were recruited by a conventional sample in Hunan province completed questionnaires for a set of variables,including age,social participation,psychological distress,HRQoL,and other demographics.Results:Mediating analysis showed that social participation could mediate alone,the mediating effectvalue was-0.055;or it could be combined with psychological distress to mediate between age and HRQoL,the mediating effect value was-0.014;But the mediating effect of psychological distress alone was not significant(β=-0.047,P＞0.05).Including the mediating role of social participation and psychological distress,the direct effect of ageing on HRQoL was still significant,theeffectvaluewas-0.126.Conclusion:These findings suggests promoting elder adults' social participation level will have important significant to alleviated the negative effect of ageing on psychological distress and HRQoL.Social work related healthy ageing should pay more attention to elderly's social participation lever improvement.关键词
