Abstract
During the Ming and Qing dynasties(1368-1911),the double-walled enceintes of the city gates of Zhengding Ancient City,Hebei Prov-ince,exhibited exceptional defensive performance and constituted a vital component of the city walls' overall defence system,with their formal charac-teristics closely intertwined with the city's defence strategies.Based on the current condition of the city gates,historical records,and archaeological materials,this article delineates the construction process of the enceintes of Zhengding and in-terprets the specific architectural term yongdao(flanked corridors)found in local gazetteers.It fur-ther infers the formal evolution of the enceinte-from a single-layer enceinte to the addition of an external yongdao,and finally to the double-walled enceinte-positing that such transitions were driven by military requirements at that time and reflected advancements in defensive tactics.By examining the evolution of city gates,this article seeks to deepen the understanding of city walls' formal features and uncover the distinctive values of the city walls of Zhengding Ancient City in the Ming and Qing dynasties.It provides an academic foundation for their conservation and promotes further study into double-walled enceintes and similar defensive structures of city walls.关键词
