Yang Jian's Interpretation of the Classic of Filial Piety:A Mind-Oriented Approach and Its Vision of Moral Transformation

Abstract
The Classic of Filial Piety serves as a fundamental text through which Yang Jian expounds his theory of mind.Rejecting the traditional chapter divisions and refraining from any augmentation based on personal interpretation,Yang strives to recover the original spirit of the classic and thereby elucidate the unified Tao(道).Grounding his exposition on the characteristics of filial pietyor its innate presence in the human mind withno need for external learning and its capacity to penetrate all phenomena.Yang identifies filial piety with benxin(本心)andTao,thereby endowing it with ontological primacy.In his view,to discuss filial piety is ultimately to illuminate benxin.From filial piety benxin is clarified and through benxin Tao is embodied.If individuals can enter Tao through filial piety,recognizing it as the spontaneous manifestation of benxin,then there is no need to seek Tao externally,or rather,people directly attain it.Proceeding from this,Yang further asserts that filial piety is the root of moral transformation and the origin of all learning.Tao is not distant or abstract but is present in everyday human relationships.Once everyone understands this principle,moral transformation will occur naturally,which forms the foundation of using The Classic of Filial Piety to civilize and govern the people.关键词
